I have a dog that had been on heartworm preventative since last May. She ran away and has just been located. She’s only been gone a month and is now testing positive for heartworms. How is that possible?
Help! Our dog was diagnosed with luxation, which either is remedied by surgery & meds. or putting him down. The surgery costs approx. $3100 for both eyes.
We can’t afford that kind of debt right now. One medication is $80 for one dose. Can anyone shed any other light on this subject, so we don’t have to use the other alternative? Vet says he’s in pain with the measured pressure behind his eyes. (which is above normal) This just started this last week, two days in a row my husband saw this, then a few days without. Yesterday, again, his eyes were clouded over huge pupils and couldn’t see enough. That’s when we took him to the vet.
Please let me know if there is any other alternatives; whether it would be a less expensive place to purchase medications or any other information that would help.

I need to know a little bit more about the case. If you could answer the following questions it would help :
1. How old is your dog and is she spayed?
2. Is she tested yearly for heartworm? Did the Veterinarian repeat the positive test and send it out to a lab for confirmation?
3. Is she on heartworm preventive all year? If not then what months?
4. Have you ever missed a dose besides the one when she was lost?
5. What heartworm product do you use and is it the correct dosage for your dogs weight?
6. Where do you purchase your heartworm meds?
7. Is the product expiration dates current?
Once you answer these questions I can try to answer your questions more accurately.
